Internet Use in the School District of Superior
Easy Answers for Common Questions
Q: I'm having a problem with my computer.
A: Reboot. Before troubleshooting or reporting *any* problem, reboot and retry.
Q: My laptop computer is not taking a charge. I have it plugged in, the battery is dead, nothing will start.
A: 80% of the time this indicates a loose connection. Check that a) the power cord is firmly plugged into the wall, b) the cord is plugged into the back of the computer firmly, and c) the connection is secure at the "brick" between the two power cords.
Q: My wireless connection doesn't work.
A: There are a few things to check.
- Make sure you are at a school with wireless. The Admin Offices, Superior Middle School, and Northern Lights all have "full building" access to wireless networking. Bryant, Four Corners, Lake Superior, Cooper, and Great Lake all have access within 150 feet of a plugged in and powered up laptop cart.
- Check that your wireless card's light is on. Most Evo N600c and Evo N610c laptops have a card installed on the back side of the screen. There is a small green LED on the back right that should be powered on. If not, use a Fn + F2 key combination to turn on the laptop. HP nc6000 laptops should have a bright blue light under your left hand. Turn wireless on/off using the "radio antenna" button just below the HP logo on your screen.
- If you have made it through steps one and two, try turning off and turning back on the wireless card, using the infromation in step 2.
- If you still don't have a signal, move 300 feet somwhere else in the building to see if you have a signal in that area. There may be a few "dead spots" in some buildings. If you get a signal elsewhere, but not in your original place, you are unfortunately in a "dead spot".
- If you continue to have difficulty and have been through these steps, report your issue to the Web Help Desk.
