CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

DECA (DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION CLUB OF AMERICA)

Juniors and seniors interested in general business management should take a close look at this activity. DECA is an organization that also promotes many school and community activities along with involvement in district, state, and national competitions. Students also have the opportunity to run for many of the state offices openings on a yearly basis. What a great way to meet new friends in a business like competition.

TYPES OF ACTIVITIES: School store, class projects, community projects, concessions stand, district, regional, state, and national competitions.

FORENSICS ONE ACT

The one-act play competition is a great way to become involved in the “Theatric Experience at SSHS. Tryouts are held each fall, with up to 25 to 30 people being selected for acting parts and crew work. Fall competitions are held at three sites, and if your play is good enough, a trip to the state competition and an illustrious “A” rating will be your reward.

GRADES: 9-12

PRACTICES: 3 to 4 practices per week, 1 1/2 to 2 hours in length
LENGTH OF SEASON: October and November

FBLA (FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA)

Another popular and highly successful activity for the business orientated student is FBLA. SSHS is the leader when it comes to state competitions for students wanting to enhance their business career skills. FBLA makes students aware of the business world, preparing them with competition of community projects, attending workshops and participating in competition in a specific business setting.

PRACTICES: Meetings are held during homeroom period, classroom time and on some evenings
LENGTH OF SEASON: The entire school year
TYPES OF ACTIVITIES: Community service, career exploration, regional, state and national competition

FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America)

Students interested in strengthening family life, furthering their personal growth and expanding their home economics careers will find FHA the right activity for them. Various activities are planned throughout the year, competitions are held, special programs are coordinated by the participants and district, regional, state and national competitions are available.

MEETINGS: Once a month or as determined by the advisor

TYPES OF ACTIVITIES: Fund raisers, special projects, human interest demonstrations, service activities, field trips and district, regional, state, and national competitions

SPEECH

Forensics gives the student an opportunity to enhance their communication, intellectual, and social skills. A total of twelve speaking categories are available for students to choose from. What an exciting way to express yourself. Entering in various competitions gives students the chance to compete and compare themselves with other students throughout the state.

TYPES OF ACTIVITIES: 2 Invitational tournaments, sub-districts, districts and state competition.

HARVARD MODEL UN

Harvard Model United Nations is an activity for students that have a keen interest in international relations and a willingness to put in many hours of research. The annual trip is made to Boston during the month of December and the student delegates spend a week at Harvard solving many world problems.

GRADES: 11-12
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 10-15
PRACTICES: Individual and group meetings as arranged by the advisor
LENGTH OF SEASON: August through mid December
ADVISOR: Tate Haglund-Pagel

MOCK TRIAL

Courtroom drama at its best, explains this highly successful and exciting program that awaits a select group of students wanting to display their talents in a law related activity. Specific court trials are assigned to schools participating in Mock Trial. The team then prepares its case for and against and presents their arguments in stiff competition at Regional and State levels. The reward for winning the state competition is to argue your case before the justices of the Wisconsin Supreme Court and qualify your team for the National Competition.

NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: Two Teams, total numbers approximately 20. A limited number of students advance to the state and national competitions.

VICA (VOCATIONAL INDUSTRIAL CLUBS OF AMERICA)

As builders, drafters, power mechanics, auto mechanics of the future you will find VICA as the right activity for your high school experience. Actual on the job training preparing you for a specific technical career awaits you with open arms at SSHS. The VICA organization is fast becoming one of the most popular activities to participate in. Competition in various areas at the state meet await our students.

TYPES OF ACTIVITIES: On the job training, float construction for homecoming, competitions to prepare for state and national meets
